Paneldiscussion on stage in front of a crowd of people

Expando participates in The Defense Industry Days

On December 3-4, Expando proudly participated in “The Defense Industry Days”, a key event organized by The Swedish Security and Defence Industry Association (SOFF), Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in Defense (SME-D), The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and The Swedish Armed Forces. This annual gathering, attended by over 250 participants from 100 companies, government agencies, media, and international guests, provides a vital forum for addressing Sweden’s defense material needs.

This year’s event was inaugurated by Supreme Commander Michael Claesson from The Swedish Armed Forces and FMV Director General Göran Mårtensson, setting the stage for open and transparent dialogue. The focus was on exploring how the Swedish Armed Forces’ operational and delivery needs can be effectively met. Later discussions, scheduled throughout the year, will delve into what specific capabilities are required.

Expando’s role in the dialogue

Expando’s Deputy CEO, Henrik Plym-Forshell, took part in a pivotal panel discussion alongside notable figures such as Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, CEO of BAE Systems Hägglunds, Helen Widin and Henrik Gauffin from FMV. The panel explored both short-term and long-term supply chain challenges and discussed how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can enhance their collaboration with FMV and The Swedish Armed Forces.

A key topic was the role of test environments and demonstrators in solving pressing military challenges and capability needs. “For SMEs, one of the key challenges is gaining direct access to innovation centers within the Armed Forces and FMV. Traditionally, we often navigate through major primes and industry associations to bridge this gap. However, if we are truly committed to accelerating innovation, particularly in terms of implementing new technologies, we advocate for a streamlined procurement process. This would allow for the purchase of demonstrators with reduced bureaucracy, enabling SMEs to collaborate more closely on iterative development. ” Plym-Forshell stated during the discussion.

What is The Defense Industry Days?

By fostering transparency and collaboration, the event facilitates a deeper understanding of the operational and technical needs, while identifying pathways for industry and government to work together effectively.

The event underscores the importance of aligning Sweden’s defense industry capabilities with evolving security challenges. Topics range from material supply chains and procurement strategies to operational readiness and international collaboration, all of which are crucial in today’s rapidly changing defense landscape.
